Jewish cemetery

A Jewish cemetery in Będzin is located on the north slope of the Góra Zamkowa (Castle Mountain), at Podzamcze Street. It is the only existing Jewish cemetery in Będzin. It was constructed in 1831 after the outbreak of cholera plague in Będzin, when it turned out that an old Jewish cemetery on Zawale was too small to hold all the dead bodies.

About 250 fully preserved and about 550 broken or damaged tombstones (matzevah) can be found within the area of 0.5 ha . The oldest tombstone comes from 1831. On the tombstones we can find inscriptions in Hebrew and Yiddish. Currently the territory of the cemetery is neglected, overgrown by a forest and the tombstones loom out of the thick layers of soil, forest cover and moss. They blend into the landscape so much that it is easy to miss them while walking on the parallel street.

The cemetery is situated about 300 meters far from the Castle of Będzin and about 1 km far from the city centre of Będzin. Podzamcze Street is a side and inactive street and is a perfect place for the production parking area.
